Library Director - Job Description


Date: May 31, 2011   Department: Eldora Public Library

Wage: $30,000 to $50,000 Annual Salary Depending on Qualifications    Status: Full-Time

Job Description: The Library Director will be responsible for the administration of the Eldora Public Library subject to the policies of the Eldora Public Library Board of Trustees.


Job Duties:

  • Prepare and manage the budget.

  • Manage the staff.

  • Keep current with library practices.

  • Manage the collection.

  • Assist the library board with planning.

  • Implement board decisions.

  • Evaluate the use of the library.

  • Update the library's web site.

  • Plan library programs.

  • Oversee the maintenance of the library's equipment, building, and grounds.

  • Promote good public relations.

  • Do related duties as assigned by the library board.

Minimum Training and Experience: (one of the following)

  • MLS from an accredited library school or BA in library science and three years experience.

  • Five years progressively responsible public library experience.

  • Administrative experience to include a minimum of three years supervisory experience.

Minimum Abilities Required:

  • Must enjoy serving the public and be able to communicate with library patrons in a polite and friendly way.

  • Must have adequate computer knowledge to assist patrons with using the computers, prepare reports for the library board, update the library's web site, and perform basic computer troubleshooting.

Preferred Abilities, Experience and Education:

  • A high level of computer knowledge is preferred.

  • A person that likes to read is preferred.


Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • The Library Director will occasionally shelve books. This requires the flexibility to bend down to the bottom shelves and may require stepping on a footstool to reach the top shelves.
