MINUTES

Eldora Public Library Board of Trustees
March 30, 2010

PRESENT:  Don Wilson, Dean Stickrod, Mary Swartz, Jill Stanish, Dan Gehring

MINUTES were approved. BILLS were approved with the addition of the agreed upon payment to Susan for painting the atrium mural.

Discussed grounds clean up. Don suggested contacting Boy Scouts to assist with the job. Dan will also contact Mrs. Penning to see about being included in the high school Service Day in May.  Don and Jill will walk the grounds to determine work to be done.  Dan will check with city about repairing a separation in the front sidewalk sections.

The new library counters have been installed. At closing each day, staff records the number and resets the counter.

Aquarium has been selected and will soon be set up.  After it has been set up, someone will return in a few weeks to teach staff how to clean and maintain it.

Hardin County Bank was consulted regarding rates for Frey Trust. Current CD rate is 2.35% with the ability to take advantage of one increase during its term. Bank indicated that the penalty for switching before maturity could be waived. Don will talk to Jim Brown next week.

Dan distributed information about the computer program, “Before You Know It”  that some libraries within the region are installing. The program is a language-learning program that could assist business people and students in learning a foreign language. There is a free “lite” version available. The full version would be approximately $300 per year. Dan will ask Evelyn Hahn to review the program. Board recommended trying the free version first while also seeking patron feedback on the program.

County Supervisors increased the amount of funding to libraries which will amount to an approximate increase of $2000 for Eldora Public Library.  Board recommended using those additional funds for purchasing books.

Movie Night at library was discussed. The first scheduled movie was March 29; no patrons showed up. Discussed showing of R rated movies and Board decided to instead promote family movie nights. Dan will talk with Sheri regarding movie recommendations and the possibility of scheduling some movie nights during the Summer Reading Program.  If movie nights are well attended, discussed the possibility of purchasing a retractable viewing screen with some of the Frey Trust funds.

Mary Swartz and Dean Stickrod agreed to remain on the board. Don will talk to the mayor about having them reappointed.

Summer Reading Program theme is “Make a Splash at Your Library” and will be 6 weeks in duration.

NEXT MEETING: Tuesday, April 27, 2010 at 5:00 pm.
