MINUTES
Eldora Public Library Board of Trustees
April 29, 2014

PRESENT: Mary Swartz, Jerry Trittien, Kristin Gehrke, Lou Schafer, Dan Gehring, Jill Stanish

MINUTES were approved. BILLS were approved.

Dan asked for reimbursement for the CCC program that was recently put on. Board approved
reimbursement in the amount of $250. $100 will come from Miscellaneous and $150 will be taken from Programming

Library materials from the HCCEF grant were purchased and they include: Hallmark Hall of Fame
DVDs, books on CD and a large collection of children’s books. Materials are still being processed.
Dan wanted to recognize Ruth Piper and Elinor Hinders for their help with processing audiobooks.
The remaining DVDs donated from the video store in town, are being processed by a Promise Jobs
worker. Dan has been pleased with his work.

Wednesday, May 7 is the Service Day for the high school. Dan said student volunteers will help from 9:30-11:00. Lou will see if he can stop by; Dan will check with the cleaning staff to see if they can be on hand to direct kids on window cleaning.

Brochures for the Summer Reading Program were handed out. Susan has lined up a number of special
programs for the summer. Kristin has volunteered to help with the Summer Reading Program.
Only one high school student offered to assist patrons with the use of technology. To assist more people, the library hosted a technology open house on two Saturdays. Dean helped one Saturday and patrons were assisted in using various devices.

Dan reported that the staff were grateful to attend the Library Symposium. Dan attended a training about how to respond to a gunman in the library. Joan attended a session on genealogy and Susan learned about doing book repairs economically. The next training like this will be in two years.

Discussed the replacement of the toilets in the women’s bathroom and the work room. Upon inspection, Lou, from Building & Grounds committee recommended we go ahead and replace them. Board approved spending up to $300 per toilet. City will take care of the installation.

Grounds were discussed. It was recommended that more perennial plants be used to cut down on annual maintenance. It was also suggested that Dan mention in his newspaper column that we are seeking hosta donations to fill in where plants were lost to drought. Board approved spending up to $100 on mulch to replenish the beds. Spending for flowers was not determined. It was suggested that board members come at 4:30 to assist with weeding before the meeting. It was also suggested that the Boy Scouts be approached about helping some Saturday with planting and spreading mulch. Dan will check with the Scout leaders.
