Minutes March 2009

Eldora Public Library Board of Trustees

March 31, 2009

PRESENT: Don Wilson, Lou Schafer, Dean Stickrod, Mary Swartz, Jill Stanish, Dan Gehring

MINUTES were approved. BILLS were approved.

Board approved to pay for this month’s books from the library fund.

Dan gave Director’s Report. Hardin County Community Endowment Foundation approved $7,500 toward Hardin County Library Association’s Project to digitize newspapers. The project has been pared down to include digitizing newspapers from 1873 to 1992. Dan suggested trying next year for a grant to digitize the remaining years. Board approved the pared down proposal.

Because Pat Spurlin’s income has increased, she is no longer eligible to participate in the Experience Works Program. April will be her last month. She will be welcome to continue as a volunteer after that time.

Discussed partnering with Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA) to help promote literacy in the community. Library would provide VISTA participants with space, equipment and help in managing the project. A VISTA participant would meet with community leaders to encourage explain and promote literacy programs. It was the consensus of the Board to have Dan pursue this idea further.

Dan contacted the South Hardin Community Service Day Coordinator and requested 12 students. Students will help with preparation of beds for spring planting. Depending on the number of volunteers provided, they may also wash windows.

Kristin mentioned that Tiger Pack sells plants in the spring and wondered if the library could purchase plants from them. In the past, the library has used Eldora Greenhouse. Board decided to leave the purchase of plants up to the discretion of the Grounds Committee.

David Schmidt provided a $200 retirement gift to the library. Board approved using the funds to purchase two 19" widescreen monitors from Heart of Iowa to replace older models that had not been upgraded.

Dan indicated that Ian will be seeking carpet cleaning bids for city areas that would include the library. Hopefully this will reduce the overall costs of annual cleaning.

Dan will check on the duration for the local option sales tax.

Lou was asked to serve on the Finance/Budget Committee. He was also asked to provide suggestions on any structural/building issues that need attention. Lou agreed to both.

NEXT MEETING: Tuesday, April 28 at 5:00 pm.
