Minutes April 2009

Eldora Public Library Board of Trustees
April 28, 2009

PRESENT: Don Wilson, Lou Schafer, Kristin Gehrke, Jill Stanish, Dan Gehring

MINUTES were amended to add Kristin Gehrke in attendance at March meeting. BILLS were approved.

Ian indicated that the library’s portion of the local option sales tax revenue was about $8,300 with the possibility of more at the end of the fiscal year.  Ian will discuss with council any guidelines for how the library may spend that money. Ian made a recommendation that the library be given an additional $1500 toward the Summer Reading Program.  Dan will prepare a proposal for materials and additional staffing and will e-mail that to Board of Trustees.  The Summer Reading program will last 6 weeks. The theme is “Be Creative at your Library” with art, music and drama components. Volunteers are being sought to assist with the program.

Ian mentioned that Eldora’s City Wide clean-up would be Friday, May 8th and Saturday, May 9th.  City employees will be out in trucks along with volunteers to haul items to dumpsters at city shop.  June 20th will be the date for collection of paint cans.

Discussed South Hardin Community Service Day taking place on Thursday, May 7. Don suggested using students to clean out beds, possibly bagging up trimmings if pruning could be done before the 7th.  Jill will talk with Jan about more specific direction for students.

Dan gave Director’s Report.  Hardin County Library Association’s project to digitize newspapers has begun. The project is expected to take 8-10 weeks.

The library received a $5,000 gift from Ed Potgeter who passed away in January.

Dan reported that the Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA) program will not be pursued. Unfortunately, the State Library indicated that “the federal VISTA (Volunteers in Service to
America) worker program to provide additional staffing resources for libraries will not be developed."

Dan will be attending the Hardin County Endowment Foundation Award ceremony in Ackley on Thursday, April 30.

Lou mentioned a literature program that he formerly coordinated for gifted students in which they read classic short stories and discussed them as a group. Dan will check with the school to see if they are currently doing this program. Such a program at the library could be a draw for older elementary and middle school kids during the Summer Reading Program.

NEXT MEETING: Tuesday, May 26 at 5:00 pm.

This resource is supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by State Library of Iowa.
