Minutes April 2010

Eldora Public Library Board of Trustees
April 27, 2010

PRESENT:  Don Wilson, Jan Dunn, Kristin Gehrke, Jill Stanish, Dan Gehring

MINUTES were approved. BILLS were approved.

Ian was present and the frost-heaved sidewalk was discussed.  The retaining wall was also discussed. Ian indicated that the city would use capital improvement funds to pay for the repair.  Jill has contacted OEL Construction, Kelly Kendall, and Rick Vaughn about the job. No bids have been turned in yet.

Don talked to Jim Brown about CDs.  Hardin County Savings Bank had a 3 year CD at the rate of 2.5% with the ability for the library to take advantage of one rate increase. Fees to make the transfer of the Frey Trust to this new option would be waived.  Board approved the transfer of funds.

Jan Dunn indicated that she was willing to continue serving on the Board of Trustees. Don will talk to Jim Brown about reappointing her.

Doug Riggs and some Boy Scouts helped with weeding, raking, tilling and glass clean up at the library. Students from South Hardin will be at the library on Wednesday, May 5 for Service Day.  They will help with grounds work and also wash windows.  Discussed planting petunias on the west edge of parking lot along with planting double impatiens in the bed near the statue of the girl reading (east side of building).  Building and Grounds Committee is planning a work day on Saturday, May 15 at 9:30 to do planting and transplanting.

Dan had priced new computers. The cheapest one was through the Iowa Educator’s Consortium at $454 without a monitor.  Innovative’s price was $475.  Dan will get an estimate for a 17” monitor and see if Heart of Iowa can obtain and match Amazon’s price.

Discussed the community room. Some patrons are not cleaning up after themselves. Dan will remind patrons about vacuuming and leaving the room clean.

Board approved the purchase of a manually operated screen to be used for movie viewing at the library.  Screen plus brackets will come to about $121.00.

Discussed trimming plum trees and the maple on the east side of the building. Building and Grounds Committee will obtain estimates for the job.

Evelyn Hahn reviewed the “Before You Know It” program and suggested that the library try it for a year. Cost will be $300.  Board approved a year’s subscription to the program.

Discussion of evaluation of software for the library was tabled until next month’s meeting.
