Minutes September 2010

Eldora Public Library Board of Trustees

September 28, 2010

PRESENT:  Kristin Gehrke, Mary Swartz, Dean Stickrod, Jill Stanish, Lou Schafer, Dan Gehring

MINUTES were approved. BILLS were approved.

A final count of the money has not been made but a preliminary count from a couple weeks ago was about $570. Remaining books were moved outside and are now free.

Discussed new catalog system. It was suggested that a sign be posted in the lobby highlighting Apollo’s unique features.  Offering bookmarks with information on Apollo was also mentioned as a way to inform patrons about the new system. Hardin County Community Endowment Fund covered $1600 of the cost of Apollo. The remaining $900 was taken from the trust fund.

Discussed policy regarding renewal of books. Permission for more than one renewal by patrons can be granted at staff’s discretion. Dan suggested that teachers and homeschoolers would benefit from additional renewal privileges.

The handle on the door into the main library has been sticking. Dan talked with Tim Harless about replacement of the handle. Tim recommended another type of handle that would be cheaper than replacing the existing one. Lou suggested taking the handle apart and lubricating the parts to see if that solves the problem. Dan will find out more information on specific replacement costs.

Dan will check on a grant from Wal-Mart to cover the cost of the newspaper project.

Discussed candidates for the vacant library board of trustees position.  No male candidates have yet stepped forward. Dean will ask someone if he is interested; if that person is not, then Lou will ask someone. If neither of these men is interested, board discussed selecting one of the four women candidates that have already expressed interest. Dan will check with the state law library to find out whether gender balance on the board is mandated. Board expressed a desire to get the vacancy filled as quickly as possible.

Dan talked with someone at the State Training School about their power back-up system. They have found the back-up to be helpful. Dan will find out about the cost of the system they installed.
