Eldora Public Library Board of Trustees

October 29, 2013

PRESENT: Dean Stickrod, Mary Swartz, Jerry Trittien, Jill Stanish, Lou Schafer, Kristin Gehrke, Dan Gehring

Jackie Winters expressed interest in the vacant board position and was present at the meeting. She read a letter responding to the board’s request for an explanation of her qualifications. She also expressed a willingness to serve on the Building and Grounds Committee and help with gardening at the library.

MINUTES approved. BILLS approved.

Dan explained that the Friends of the Library would be helping pay some of the bills that were listed as Library Trust on the list of bills.

Both Rachel Inks and Kathy Reysack have decided they are not interested in serving on the Library Board at the present time.

The board voted unanimously to recommend Jackie Winters to the mayor for appointment to the Library Board.

Dan gave his Director Report:

  • The downspout should be repaired in early November. Dan said it would be about $120.

  • A children’s Halloween party is planned for Thursday at 4:00 pm at the library.

  • Library received $1644.86 from Enrich Iowa and should be spent before the end of the fiscal year.

  • Movie License has been secured and programming input is welcome. Dan is also looking for volunteers to help with programs.

  • Fall Survey is taking place.

  • Library will have Santa on December 14. Lions will provide the Santa suit but they are in need of a new Santa. Lou will think about doing it.

Discussed Long Range Plan. Dan distributed a draft. To see what other libraries have done for their plans, Dan suggested board members google “Iowa public library plan” to get some ideas.

Some suggestions for future goals included providing education on e-readers after the holidays, evaluating card catalog software, repainting, and planning for technology improvements. It was suggested that board members compile additional suggestions for goals that could be added to future years. Dan would like to have the draft completed by December 2013.

New projector has arrived. Discussed whether it should be ceiling mounted or left on a cart. It was recommended that staff try some programs with it on the cart and then see what recommendation the staff makes.

Board discussed helping with the City website by having a Community Calendar and Business Directory for Eldora. It was suggested that the city site link to the library site so staff could more easily manage updates from the library.
