Eldora Public Library Board of Trustees

May 27, 2014

PRESENT: Dean Stickrod, Jerry Trittien, Kristin Gehrke, Lou Schafer, Mary Swartz, Jill Stanish, Dan Gehring

Ian was present to discuss budget issues related to receiving the HCCEF grant. He requested confirmation of the Board’s decision regarding staff raises.

MINUTES were approved. BILLS were approved.

New toilets were installed and are working well. The newspaper had a nice article about the newly acquired materials from the HCCEF grant.

Summer Reading program sign up will begin after school gets out on Friday. The kick-off will be Tuesday, June 3 from 1:00-2:30 with hot dogs and activities for kids.

Service Day at the library was a success with 11 students helping with window cleaning, raking, weeding, planting and spreading mulch. Jerry helped haul mulch and plant flowers and Linda Hallett supervised window washing.

Thanks to Board members who helped with weeding the beds prior to the Board meeting. It was recommended that more mulch be put around the newly planted hostas. One of the rose bushes will be pruned and another removed. Kristen will ask a landscaping neighbor to meet her and Jackie at the library to give suggestions on low maintenance plants to help fill out the beds.

The Friends have been working on their membership drive. Dan will ask the Friends of the Library if they would be able to assist with up to $200 for additional plants and mulch.

Joanne Smith (Experience Works worker) finished the Eldora Business Directory. A link can be found on the library website and will also be linked from the city web site.

Dan requested input from the board on whether small gifts should be given to library volunteers. The Board unanimously agreed that the luncheon was an adequate thank you.

Discussed staff raises. Finance Committee will forward to Ian the Board’s decision to approve a 45 cent/hour raise for full-time staff and most of the part-time staff at the library. The raise will not apply to the newly hired cleaning assistant.

The library has been working on weeding materials with the assistance of a library volunteer. Dan explained the weeding process and the criteria used for removing books from circulation. Staff members make the final decision for withdrawal of materials.

The book sale during the Pine Lake Festival will be held downtown. Dan arranged for young men from the State Training School to help with hauling books. Board authorized Dan to buy pizza for the boys helping out. Books not sold during the Festival will be brought back to the library and continue to be for sold for a limited time.

Terms for Kristen and Jill expire July 1. Both are willing to continue on the Board.
