September 30, 2014

PRESENT: Dean Stickrod, Jerry Trittien, Kristin Gehrke, Mary Swartz, Jackie Winters, Jill Stanish, Dan Gehring

MINUTES were approved. BILLS were approved.

Dan gave Director’s Report. The Friends of the Library donated money for replacement cushions for children’s area. Compressor for the air conditioner has been fixed; total for parts and labor were as quoted.

Dan encouraged Board members to attend the two upcoming Humanities Iowa Programs. The first one will be this Sunday, October 5 at 2pm featuring Mike Glover. The second program with Dan Kaercher will take place on November 9 at 2pm.

Rex Lawler visited the meeting and expressed a willingness to serve on the Board of Trustees. Dan will forward his name to the mayor for appointment to the Board. Once appointed, Rex would fill the vacancy on the Buildings and Grounds Committee.

Renewal of Movie License was discussed. It was agreed that the library would not renew at this time. It was suggested that the library could pay for a one time license if they wanted to try an outdoor movie during the 2015 Summer Reading Program.

Library will serve chili to kids before trick or treating on Halloween. Kiwanis Key Club members from high school will be helping. Discussed having library host a costume swap prior to Halloween.

Discussed whether interlibrary loan requests for DVDs should be free for patrons. Given the extended loan period on the materials, it was agreed by the board that a $3 charge per item would be reasonable.

The Fall Survey will be conducted soon. It was suggested that a place be included for volunteering. Dan will add to the survey a list of volunteer opportunities with a place for contact information.

Discussed book spending and the need to supplement the budget to meet future buying needs. Board authorized Dan to use the $855 donation from the city of New Providence for next month’s purchases. Special Library Trust Interest, Open Access Plus Funds and other miscellaneous contributions will help fund book purchases of up to $1500/month.

The Iowa Library Association conference takes place in October. Board encouraged Dan to register for the conference. It was suggested that Joan and Susan could attend a later training in Mason City.
